From Helen Smiley:
My name is Helen Smiley, and I’ve lived my entire life in the North Country. I hope you’ll take a few moments to hear why I’m so proud to endorse Emily to represent us in Congress, and then join me in endorsing her.
I’ve never been much for political activism, but after the events of the 2016 election, I knew that I could no longer take a backseat in our political process. With a lot of encouragement from my daughter, Michelle, I’ve educated myself, joined local organizations and discussion groups, and volunteered to help folks facing tough times. I’ve felt firsthand just how great it feels to be a driver of positive change in our communities.
That’s how I came to know and support Emily — a fierce, dedicated advocate who is ready to stand up for our communities and our North Country values. I’m proud to support her and her pragmatic brand of leadership — which we need now more than ever.
There’s no question that Emily’s resume is impressive: she has helped create jobs here, which we really need, and she taught our kids as a professor of economics and business. But I’m particularly moved by her volunteer efforts — organizing teams to maintain transitional housing, serving community meals, and lodging homeless neighbors when temperatures drop below freezing. I like to think I have a pretty good sense of character and work ethic — and let me tell you, Emily emulates a strong sense of both.
Many women and men have achieved admirable success, but ethical behavior is grounded in one’s character. Emily is a woman of integrity, authenticity, and loyalty. I’m proud to support her candidacy — and if you are too, please share your story!
Take it from me — I’ve spent my whole life here. Emily truly emulates North Country values, and I have no doubt she’ll carry those with her to represent us in Congress.
